Dacthal now available from Amvac

Amvac Chemical Corp. has announced that the new label and source for Dacthal, a key herbicide for use in specialty crops, have been approved for use in the United States and the product is now available to growers nationwide through Amvac's distribution. Growers seeking a source of Dacthal 75W should call their local suppliers or they can call Amvac's customer service group at 1-888-462-6822.

For more than 30 years, Dacthal has been the base herbicide program of vegetable growers throughout the world. When Dacthal is used in a pre-emergent weed control program, it prevents most weeds from ever competing with the crop. Often no further operations are needed.

Those weeds that do emerge are weakened and are easier to remove with follow-up herbicides or mechanical cultivation.

Dacthal is unique because it can be applied safely in a pre-plant or preemergent program. Very few herbicides have the safety record of Dacthal. In high-value specialty crops even a minimal reduction in plant stand or vigor, caused by other herbicides, can far outweigh the cost of a typical Dacthal program.

The registered uses and use patterns for Dacthal remain unchanged from the previous label. The product is registered for use on a large number of specialty crops including onions (all types), broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, chinese broccoli, chinese cabbage, rapini, bok choy, gai choy, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rape greens, turnip greens and all other leafy vegetables in the Brassica crop group, field beans, snap beans, mungbeans, southern peas, seeded melons, cucumbers, squash, garlic, horseradish, potatoes, radish, sweet potatoes, yams, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, strawberries, cotton, turf, and 120 ornamental plant species.

Dacthal was previously marketed by ISK Biosciences, which discontinued production four years ago for economic reasons, causing a great deal of concern among growers accustomed to the many unique qualities of this widely used product. Amvac, whose corporate strategy is to acquire mature product lines from the large multinational companies, saw an opportunity to add a valuable herbicide to its growing portfolio of specialty products.

Over the past two years, Amvac made an extensive effort to acquire the business and develop a new source of production, which recently was evaluated and approved by EPA.
