Immigration, food safety top conference agenda

Immigration reform and food safety top the list of discussion topics scheduled for the Texas Produce Convention September 20-23 at South Padre Island.

Also, invited keynote speaker Chuck Conner, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, will discuss the farm bill.

The annual meeting is not all business, however. Participants may compete in a fishing tournament September 20 or a golf tournament September 21. And a casino night and silent auction is scheduled for Saturday evening, September 22.

The educational session gets underway with a breakfast meeting Saturday morning with a look at the current state of immigration reform. The general session begins at 10:15 with a panel discussing “The New Face of Food Safety.”

Afternoon topics include worldwide outlook for grapefruit, citrus greening, citrus mites management, and food safety for citrus.

A vegetable session includes a look at the H2-A worker program, research on food safety issues from Texas A&M, and onion diseases.

Sunday's sessions include an awards breakfast, more discussion on immigration, food safety, herbicide injury, A Rio Grande Valley water conservation project and transportation, among others.
