Peanut Seed Quality Meeting, Peanut Expo meets March 24 in Altus

Peanut Seed Quality Meeting and Peanut Expo scheduled March 24 in Altus, Okla.

The 71st annual Texas/Oklahoma Peanut Seed Quality Meeting and the Peanut Expo will change venue this year, meeting March 24 at the Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Okla.“These events are a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service, USDA-ARS, USDA-RMA and partners in the peanut industry, says Ron Sholar, Executive Director, Oklahoma Peanut Commission.

“This will be the 71st year that seed quality issues will be discussed by those with an interest in the peanut seed industry,” Sholar says. The Seed Quality Meeting will start at 7 a.m. and will end by 9.

Peanut Expo

The Peanut Expo will follow and will feature the latest in research results, production advice, and market outlook. 

“If you have interests in the peanut industry, this is where you will want to be on March 24,” Sholar adds.  “EXPO will kick off with registration and exhibits opening at 9 a.m. with the program starting at 9:50 and ending at 2:30 p.m.

The agenda includes:

  • Peanut Market Outlook for 2016 – George Lovatt, Lovatt and Rushing, Peanut Broker
  • Disease Management Update – Dr. John Damicone, OSU Extension Plant Pathologist, Stillwater
  • National Peanut Board Report – Gayle White, Chair & Bob Parker, President, NPB ( An election will be held to select an Oklahoma nominee to the National Peanut Board.)
  • Weed Management Update – Dr. Todd Baughman, Weed Scientist, OSU Institute for Ag BioSciences, Ardmore
  • Best Management Practices for Peanuts – Dr. Jason Woodward, Assoc. Prof. and Extension Plant Pathologist, Texas A&M AgriLife, Lubbock
  • High-Oleic Peanut Varieties Developed for Optimal Performance in the Southwest – Dr. Kelly Chamberlin, Breeder, USDA-ARS Center for Peanut Improvement, Stillwater
  • 2015 Disease Evaluations of Peanut Advanced Breeding Lines – Dr. Rebecca Bennett, Pathologist, USDA-ARS Center for Peanut Improvement, Stillwater
  • Marketing Oklahoma Developed Peanut Varieties – Mark Hodges, Oklahoma Genetics Inc.

The OPC District 2 Election Caucus will be held at 2:30 p.m. for producers from Alfalfa, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Cotton, Garfield, Comanche, Grady, Grant, Jefferson, Major, Kingfisher, and Stephens counties.

Participants also will have an opportunity to visit Expo sponsor booths. Lunch is sponsored by these industry partners.
